AFTAID responded with Sweet Charity AFTAID is very pleased to have been able to help 72 year old Sheila Roberts maintain her independence by providing a grant toward a new washing machine following her old one reaching the end of its useful service. Every wash day was a worry as she risked flooding her home due to the worn-out parts. Mrs Roberts, who worked for sweet company Bassett's for over 20 years turned to Sweet Charity (the benevolent organisation set up to look after the industry's 'aged poor'). Sheila has lived with arthritis for many years, and on a basic pension, maintaining her house without a washing machine presented a serious challenge. Dealing with leaks was an even greater problem. Water damage to the kitchen floor and cupboards would have been even worse to deal with. Obviously to wash by hand for the foreseeable future, when suffering arthritis, was not a reasonable situation for anyone let alone a 72 year old woman. Sweet Charity responded to Mrs Roberts by sending a Welfare Officer to assess the situation. That included making sure Sheila had all the Government help available. For the washing machine there was no other option than to apply for help from independent sources. AFTAID supported Sweet Charity's resulting application by making a grant payable to the chosen washing machine retailer. Within ten days, the machine was installed and ready for use. "Each time I used the old machine I thought that I'd flood the house. It's just something I can't do without and I couldn't see how I would be able to afford a new one"
"I'm so pleased with the washing machine and relieved that I don't have to panic when it comes to doing my laundry." |
